Audition Process for New Members
Concentus is always interested in recruiting qualified new members. The size of our group is flexible. We’re looking for experienced choral singers who are committed to small-group singing, able to learn music independently, and interested in lifelong improvement as musicians.
Schedule an Audition
We audition prospective members twice a year, generally in August/September and in January. To schedule an audition, please contact conductor Gwen Gassler.
Auditions are typically held at in Room 200 of Asbury First United Methodist Church, 1040 East Avenue, at the corner of East Avenue and Granger Streets in Rochester, two blocks north of Culver Road. Park in the back lot, come in the back double-doors of the church, turn left, and proceed through the interior double doors and up the stairs to Room 200. Signs will be posted to assist you.
Conductor Gwen Gassler and another member of Concentus will be present at your audition. Auditions, which usually last about half an hour, are relaxed and informal, and are designed to provide us with information about you, with plenty of time allowed for you to introduce yourself and ask questions about Concentus. You'll complete a form giving us basic information about your musical training and interests. It's a good idea to warm up your voice before you arrive.
The audition consists of three parts:
- a basic warm-up to demonstrate vocalization and range with piano accompaniment
- a brief unaccompanied sight-singing test of the conductor's choosing (about eight bars long, standard notation)
- a brief song of your own choosing; you may sing a cappella or bring accompaniment music with you
After the Audition
We inform singers as quickly as possible about the outcome of their auditions.
